Letter -- AU Exchange 2023
Dear AU-writer,
Thank you so much for writing something for me. Below, I've rambled about some of the types of tags I've listed and about the pairings I've nominated. Aside from my DNWs, these are really just meant to be suggestions and jumping off points in case you're looking for inspiration or extra info. Please don't feel bound to any one idea. If you took one look at the tags and had a specific idea you're excited about writing, go for it!
Likes: Fluff, mystery, adventure, casefic, hurt/comfort, found families, strong female characters, f/f, affection, girls with swords, friends-to-lovers, missing scenes, post-canon, scars, injury recovery, happy/hopeful endings, time-travel, time-loops, unconventional formats that fit the canon setting (letters, journals, case reports, newspapers, non-linear narratives, choose your own adventure-style fics, etc.)
DNW: Explicit sex (mentions and fade to black are okay), non-con, dubcon, incest, animal harm/death (hunting is fine as long as not graphic and fighting any kind of monster is fine too--just please don't kill pets or animal companions or the like), permanent main character death, graphic violence/gore, torture, self-harm, character-bashing, kidfic, unrequested genderswap
FE3H-specific requests: Female Byleth please. CF is my favourite route so if you're not partial to it could you please be vague about route or go with an AU version where everybody lives or something set in the first half of the game.
Comments on tags:
Sunless Seas/Fallen London: On the off chance someone is a fan of the Fallen London world and Fire Emblem, I would love to see some sort of mashup of these two. I've only played a little of Fallen London, but I've played a lot of Sunless Seas, Sunless Skies, and Mask of the Rose, which is set in London right after the fall so I'm fairly familiar with the world's lore. So please feel free to do whatever you want with this, whether it be having a fallen version of Fodlan,or an AU with the Fodlan characters in Fallen London.
Time-travel and time-loop: I love all sorts of variations of time travel and time loops so I grabbed lots of those tags. But I know from experience that these are a lot of work and can get very long. If you're feeling ambitious and want to write something long I'm all for it but if you're trying to keep it short feel free to use a few lines of exposition for explain why/how the characters got into situation so you can get to the meaty bits.
Survival/stranded/trapped tags: Take any canon event and make an AU where the characters didn't get actually rescued/arrive safely/etc. and instead got stranded in the wilderness and I am there for it! I love seeing characters have to rely on each other to survive and how the challenge can make them face their feelings for each other and bring them close together.
Accidental/Fake/Secret/Arranged Marriage: Marriage tropes are always a lot of fun. How would canon be different if the characters had to pretend to be married (for reasons) or actually were behind the scenes? Would it change some important event? Or what sort of behind the scenes mayhem was caused by the characters trying to keep their secret? Or what sort of circumstances would prompt an arranged marriage and how do characters navigate the inherent awkwardness of it?
Time period AU (Regency, Victorian, WWI): Okay look I think WWI is a longshot, but I appreciate the gritty setting as an analogue for Fire Emblem specifically. I've always found WWI fascinating because of how people started out so idealistic (and even naive) about what the war would be; they didn't really understand how horrific modern warfare is and the people on the front lines were quickly disillusioned.
Regency and Victorian are both more cozy settings and I'm always up for tea and libraries. Though I'm also up for these settings being used to explore class divide between requested characters or anything like that--disapproving families, secret relationships, etc.
Amnesia: Honestly I just this this is a super fun trope. How does a character react when they don't remember the people around them? How does that change their behaviour? How does it affect the people around them who do remember?
General comments about pairings:
Legend of Korra
RWBY
Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Legend of Korra
Korra/Asami
I've read the comics so feel free to include that material if you're so inclined.
I really love the arc of their relationship, how they slowly get to know each other, slowly become friends, and that eventually evolves into something more. I also especially love that Asami doesn't have any powers but is still hyper-competent and kick-ass. If you're doing an AU where they meet differently/earlier it would be interesting to see what Korra's initial impression to Asami would be without Mako since in the series she starts out being jealous and assuming Korra is a prissy rich girl.
RWBY
Blake/Yang
I'm a late arrival to this series but now that I've finally seen it, it's become a huge favourite. I adore Yang especially and really enjoyed watching the development of her relationship with Blake over the series. But I also love how all the characters grow and mature, especially over the course of V3-4 and then really come into their own in V7-8 and finally 9.
For some of the other tags not described above...
*ALL: Canon event that happened to Character A happens to Character B instead -- What if Blake had been horrifically injured at the end of V3 instead of Yang. How would that have changed their dynamic?
*ALL: characters meet earlier than in canon / ALL: Characters Meet for the First Time During a Disaster/All: Met while captured together -- What if they hadn't met at Beacon but under completely different circumstances, such as while Blake was still part of the White Fang, or during some disaster where they had to work together?
ALL: Characters Must Fight in Gladiatorial Arena / ALL: Death Game AU -- What if their enemies somehow put them in a situation where they had to fight each other or a death game where the survival of both parties wasn't guaranteed or might come at the cost of the other's life? How would they deal with the angst? Who would try to sacrifice themselves for whom? How would they get out of it?
FE:Sacred Stones
Seth/Eirika
I love pairings that involve a member of royalty and their retainer or bodyguard. I love the mix of protectiveness and loyalty and that tension between duty/obligation and romantic love. I'm always up for hurt/comfort with these two since it's basically built-in to their story arc in the game. I love seeing Seth struggle with his sense of duty versus his feeling for Eirika. And I love seeing Eirika evolve as a character and gong from naive and fearful to being an experienced fighter and one willing to shoulder the burden of leadership if they're not able to find Ephraim.
FE:Three Houses
Dorothea/Petra
Petra is still so young in part 1 of the game so in your AU please make sure to set it when she's older--or have her be older since it's an AU I guess? Either way please have her be 17+,
I love how strong and hardworking Petra is and while her verbal missteps are often used for comedic relief I really admire her for persisting in a second language. Dorothea meanwhile is so lovely and kind but she's really down on herself a lot of the time. She seems so convinced that her appearance and voice are the only things anyone really sees in her and she's determined to get married before those things fade. So there's this surprisingly sad undercurrent to several of supports despite how cheerful and uplifting she is so many others.
Dorothea/Ingrid
There's so much potential for this ship, it's really sad that they don't have an A support. I mean that scene with the ring during their Paralogue was just priceless. Ingrid is so serious and straight-laced and uninterested in traditional femininity (makeup, dresses, etc.) and then there's Dorothea, the former opera star--it's a sort of opposites attract setup.
Edelgard/Byleth
I love Edelgard's determination to make the world a better place and the moral greyness surrounding the decisions she makes and the ones she's forced to make due to the silthers. I love that her story is complex and tragic, but that it can also lead to hope in CF route where Byleth and Edelgard team up to reclaim Fodlan for humanity, and in doing so reclaim their own. Byleth's story arc of her slowly becoming more human becomes especially interesting with the loss of her crest and gaining a heartbeat.
